5 Fall Chores You Shouldn’t Postpone

Now that fall is here, you’ve likely seen some of your neighbors conducting fall maintenance work in and around their homes. This is actually a good practice to follow, and you should be doing the same. If you don’t, come winter you may run into small but costly problems that you’ll have to repair.

In this article, the AC repair experts from Mechanical Technologies list the five fall chores you should never put off.

Clear the Gutters – Fall is a season that’s known for falling autumn leaves, so if you have a gutter system on your home, chances are a large portion of these leaves will fall into them. If it rains before the gutters are cleared, there will be nowhere for the rain water to go, which means the gutters will overflow and wreak havoc on your home. With that in mind, make sure to keep your gutters clear throughout the season. Fall is also a good time to have a gutter guard system installed to keep debris out of the gutters permanently.

Detach the Hoses – Water can expand in your pipes as it freezes, leaving them vulnerable to ruptures and leaks. Before winter comes, make sure to turn off the inside valves that control water flow to the outdoor hose spigots. Don’t forget to drain any remaining water from the supply lines for sprinklers and pools as well. To prevent the pipes in your home from freezing, consider insulating pipes in unheated areas of your home.

Check the Roof – Leaks can severely damage your roofing system, so make sure to inspect it during the fall season. Use binoculars to spot-check the roof as best you can from the ground, and call a roofing professional to climb onto the roof for a closer examination to locate any structural damage. If anything needs to be repaired, get it done before winter arrives.

Plug Leaks – On the other hand, if there are any air leaks in your home’s walls, windows and ductwork, make sure to get them plugged immediately. For the walls and windows, you can use caulk, foam boards, expandable sealants and weather stripping to plug any leaks or openings. However, sealing leaks in the ductwork should be left in the hands of air duct cleaning professionals like Mechanical Technologies. By doing this, you can save up to $400 on your annual heating and cooling bills.

Replace Filters – Furnace filters should be replaced every three months, as a dirty filter can reduce heat and airflow, causing damage to the HVAC system that can be costly to repair.
