Here are some of the most common reasons behind the noises made by your heating and cooling ducts.

Out-of-Shape Ducts

Over time, ducts can get bent out of shape or sag. Static pressure can build up when your ducts are having difficulty pushing air out. 

Dirty Ducts & Filters

Professional air duct cleaning is important. If you don’t have your filters and ductwork cleaned regularly, the dirt buildup may cause your HVAC system to produce loud noises.

Closed Vent Dampers

When more than one vent damper is closed, your HVAC system may have problems pushing air out, resulting in noisy ducts.

Hard-Pipe Ducts

Hard-pipe ducts don’t suffer from airflow issues as much as flexi-ducts do, but they can cause quite a racket.

Thin Metal Ductwork

The thinner the metal, the more it expands as the temperature changes. Thin metal ducts will make more noise than thicker ones as they expand when you use your furnace.

Wrong Duct Size

Your HVAC unit will try to blow as much air as possible into your home, but small ducts make that hard. As a result, the ducts expand and make noise.

Wrong Duct Shape

Round ducts are the best at preventing annoying noises. Square and rectangular ducts aren’t as good at this, as they adjust poorly to temperature changes.
