Heat Pump Basics You Need to Know

Even if it’s just barely fall, it’s never too soon to start thinking about lowering your home’s heating and cooling costs. This means making sure your heat pump is in good working condition, especially as the climate gets colder. With proper care and maintenance, your heat pump will become efficient at using heat from the air to warm and cool your home while also using less electricity to extract and blow it indoors.

There are three main things to consider when handling your heat pump: the air handler, the compressor, and the thermostat. These parts work together to provide comfort in your home while still being energy efficient. Air conditioner service specialist Mechanical Technologies explains some of the basics you need to know about your heat pump here.

Air Handler – This rests inside your house and contains a blower, evaporator and heat exchanger, as well as a filter. The filter removes dust and airborne particulates from the air, and the blower sends the air through the ductwork. The evaporator and heat exchanger pick up the heated or cooled refrigerant and condition your air. A drainpipe directed outdoors removes any condensation from the air, which can be significant during rainy weather.

Compressor – This is a large unit that sits outdoors and contains the coils through which the refrigerant circulates. Our AC repair technicians know that what makes your heat pump’s coils different from an air conditioner’s coils is how both the indoor and outdoor coils perform heating and cooling depending on what your system is running. Both types of coils actually carry refrigerant that’s used to heat or cool the incoming air as it’s pushed through them.

Thermostat – This component controls the operation of the air handler and compressor. Its operation is simple and straightforward during the summer months, but when the climate becomes colder, especially during the fall and winter, such conditions can trigger the operation of an electrical heating element inside the air handler. This also happens when temperatures drop below freezing for extended periods of time.
