How to Tell When Your Air Ducts Should Be Sealed

Your HVAC system provides cool or warm air with just a few adjustments to your thermostat. However, you might find some rooms aren’t as comfortable as the rest. This is one of the many indications that your air ducts need to be inspected, cleaned and sealed. Mechanical Technologies explains other signs your home’s ductwork needs immediate attention.

High Utility Bills

Have you noticed your energy bills increasing significantly? It’s likely that your ducts have problems keeping in conditioned air. Leaky ductwork forces your HVAC system to produce more heated or cooled air to maintain the temperature on the thermostat.

Inconsistent Temperatures

Over time, duct leaks and other issues can cause indoor temperatures to go haywire. You may try to fix this issue by adjusting the vents in individual rooms and adjusting the thermostat to reach the temperature you want in a certain area. However, this is not a good plan because it will throw the airflow pressure within the ductwork off balance, putting your HVAC system under stress as it works harder to bring your indoor living spaces to comfortable levels.

Poor Indoor Air Quality

An indication of a ductwork leak – and the need to have it sealed – is when members of your household experience allergies and other respiratory problems. The home may also smell musty, which means there’s likely mold within the ducts. Poor indoor air quality is your signal to have your entire system checked out, including the ductwork.

Working with a professional HVAC contractor is the best solution to the problem of leaky ductwork. Here’s what you can expect if you have your air ducts sealed:

  1. Inspect duct network for leaks and problems.
  2. Repair or replace damaged duct sections.
  3. Tighten loose duct sections.
  4. Straighten out tangled ducts.
  5. Seal the cracks, holes and other breaches in your ductwork.
  6. Seal the connections between the duct sections.
  7. Secure the ducts to registers and vents.
  8. Test your ducts for carbon monoxide leaks.
