How to Treat Strange HVAC Vent Odors

Strange smells coming from the HVAC vents can occasionally be an issue in some households. Sometimes, these will go away naturally, but if they persist, you should have your HVAC system checked out immediately. After all, you won’t be comfortable in a house that reeks of foul odors. In this post, your air conditioner service specialist, Mechanical Technologies, shares how you can get rid of strange HVAC vent odors.

Burning odor

You might smell something burnt coming from your furnace when you ignite it after it’s been dormant for a while. This isn’t something that you should worry about if it goes away shortly after. It’s simply due to the furnace eliminating the dust that’s built up in the heat exchanger. However, if your vents smell burnt, with a smell akin to that of something overheating, turn the furnace off right away and check your HVAC filters to see if they’re dirty. If not, there may be wiring issues in the unit. Don’t hesitate to call your local HVAC repair expert to check it out.

Musty odor

If you turn on your cooling unit and it smells rotten, similar to the smell of old socks, then mold could be growing inside it. Your AC repair expert will tell you that this is primarily caused by improper moisture drainage when the unit is being used. If left unchecked, this issue can lead to water building up in your ductwork, making it an ideal breeding ground for mold. Before the spores can spread around your house and cause complications, make sure that you get your unit serviced right away.

Sewage smell

This is a rare occurrence, but it can happen if there’s a problem with your sewer line. A portion of your air duct might be too close to the sewage. Try to check your sewage line to see if there’s a backup, or if there’s damage to the pipes in your plumbing. If there are issues, call on your local plumbing company for assistance to get rid of the foul odor.
