My Commercial HVAC is Acting Strange – What Do I Do?

It can happen to anyone. You are sitting in your office, enjoying the cool comfort of your commercial HVAC, when it happens. You hear a strange sputter. Maybe your HVAC makes a sort of hiccup sound, or you start hearing a strange whirring coming from your vents. Either way, it’s distracting. However, you think- it’s ok. It’s the end of the summer, it’s probably just been overused. You remind yourself to turn it off before you leave and don’t really think of it again…until the following week, when the sounds get weirder. Louder. Then you hear an ominous click, followed by…nothing. No sounds, no air, no more cool refrigeration. When your commercial HVAC is acting strangely, always call in the experts before that loud click, before the whirring, and definitely before it just stops!

How do I Know When to Call the Commercial HVAC Experts?

Just because you rent or own a commercial space doesn’t mean you are all of a sudden an expert on commercial HVAC units. Most of the time, you are just happy you have a reliable unit to turn off and on for the comfort of your employees and customers. In addition, you have plenty of other things to worry about. So how to you know when to call in the experts? We have some simple tips to ensure you don’t have to deal with uncomfortable customers and/or a group of unproductive employees!

Strange Smells

This one is pretty obvious. If you turn on your commercial HVAC one morning and begin to notice weird smells, it can be an obvious sign that there is something wrong with your unit. Granted, sometimes it can be a weird smell that gets pulled in from the outside air, just like when your residential HVAC unit pulls in the smell of the neighbor’s firepit. However, most commercial HVACs are much more adept at filtering out outside pollutants, so unless someone burned the popcorn again, turn it off and call the HVAC experts right away.

Strange Sounds

Many people tend to ignore weird sounds coming from their vents. After all, it could be anything- a bird that decided to take a walk across your outdoor unit, the repairman next door, or even just bad weather echoing through the vents. But when your unit starts to whir or sputter, it’s a definite sign you need a commercial HVAC specialist to check out what’s going on.

Strangely High Energy Bills

In El Paso, it’s a given that everyone uses their HVAC unit during the summer. We all adjust to having a much larger energy bill in the summer than the winter for the most part. However, if you are noticing a spike in your energy usage as the summer goes by, it could be more than a few employees who just need it to be ice cold in the office/warehouse/boutique, etc.. Your HVAC unit could easily be trying to tell you it’s in need of a maintenance check to see what is keeping it from working efficiently. When the energy spikes, call the experts to optimize your unit’s performance!
