Signs Your HVAC needs a Professional Check-up

Not machine is perfect, and this goes for your HVAC unit too. Sometimes a unit might be close to breaking and gives you a few signs of it. These signs mean that you need to have the unit checked by a professional. El Paso Mechanical Technologies has qualified staff ready to help keep you HVAC in good condition. Two of the biggest signs that your heating and cooling system needs a checkup are bead smells and leaking.

Bad Smells

The easiest way to know if your HVAC is in trouble is if you smell strange odors coming from the unit. There are several odors to keep a look out for, which can mean different things. If your unit is producing a rotten egg smell, it can be a sign of a natural gas leak. In this case, do not meddle with the unit except to turn it off. Then vacate the area quickly and call the gas company. If the unit is overheating or burning a frayed wire, then there might an electric smell. Electricity is hard to pinpoint, but it usually smells like a piece of hair caught in a hair dryer. If you smell this coming from the HVAC, turn it off immediately. Finally, if there is a burning smell coming from the vents than your unit may be about to shut down.

Of course, using the heat on your heating and cooling unit requires some kind of spark to get warm air flowing. But this should not be smelled by you. However, if you have turned the heat on for the first time that season, a burning smell may happen at first. This is normal, and may last up to twenty four hours. If the smell last longer than that though, it can be a sign that something is wrong. All of these smells are signs that your heating and cooling unit needs to be checked by a professional.

Leaking

The next biggest sign that something could be wrong your HVAC is if you see leaking. This can be leaking that you find around the unit or under it. Leaking would be visible signs of moisture coming from the HVAC. Some places that the unit might leak from are its vents, underneath the unit, and from any exhaust ports. This will not likely be dripping, though that can also happen. Typically it will look like condensation forming on or around the unit.

To be sure that the leakage is coming from your unit, first check the surrounding area. If you can find no source of the liquid, then turn off the unit and begin removing the vents. If you find signs of water inside, then your unit needs to be looked at. In addition, if you find signs of mold on or around the unit, that can also mean there is a leak in the unit. Mold is another sign that you need a professional to come and look at you HVAC unit.

Your heating and cooling unit is working hard to keep you in the perfect temperature. But it is not perfect and sometimes it needs a little extra care. El Paso Mechanical Technologies can help keep your unit in great working condition. Two big signs that your HVAC needs a checkup are bad smells, and leaking. If you experience these signs, contact a professional quickly.
