Why do Swamp Coolers Require Open Windows?

A swamp cooler, also called an evaporative cooler, must have proper air balance in order to function correctly.  The importance of proper air balance is the reason why it is essential for homeowners throughout El Paso to leave their windows open if they are cooling their home with a swamp cooler.  If you are leaving your windows open but still not getting the cooling effect that you desire, you should consult with Mechanical Technologies. One of our skilled technicians will determine if he needs to service your air conditioner.  You may also think about replacing your evaporative cooler. A refrigerated air unit might be a better fit for your home.

A Swamp Cooler Will Require Open Windows

A swamp cooler works by pulling air through the box-shaped cooling unit. There are porous surfaces which allow air to flow through and a fan that actually pulls the air in. The porous sides of the swamp cooler have a pad that has water-absorbing material inside.  In order for the unit to work properly, the pads should be damp, not soaked. There is a pan at the bottom of the air conditioner. There is also a small pump in the pool of water which lifts the water onto the pads. In order for the cooled pads to create the evaporative effect needed to cool the air, there must be appropriate air flow. The air conditioning unit has to pull in the same volume of air as it blows into the house.  Opening the windows can help make that happen.

More About Air Flow

If the air in your home makes a loud whistle or humming noise you may not have enough air flow. You should open another window in this instance. If bedroom doors are slamming when the cooler turns on, you also need to open the window wider or open another window. Getting the right air flow will add efficiency to your home.
