The Importance of Well-Maintained Air Ducts

Whether you’re looking for a new home or trying to keep up with home maintenance, don’t overlook the ductwork. In today’s post, local AC repair company Mechanical Technologies shares a look at the importance of air duct inspection.

HVAC Air Duct Cleaning & Inspection

The air ducts in an average home require cleaning every three to five years, over which time particles that are too fine for the air filter to catch can accumulate in the joints and seams of the ductwork. Some of these particles can recirculate into indoor living spaces, as well as collect on your air conditioning system’s cooling coils.

There’s no real benefit to doing air duct cleaning more frequently than every three years, but there are circumstances where it may be necessary. For example, many types of interior remodeling projects generate a lot of dust, such as from drywall or tile installation, some of which may get into the air ducts. If you have pets that shed fur and dander, you may need to have your ductwork inspected more often.

Air Ducts & House Hunting

If you’re looking for a new house, make it a point to ask the realtor or current homeowner if the ductwork is regularly cleaned and inspected. A well-maintained duct system can save you from the unexpected cost and inconvenience of dirty, leaky ducts. This is especially important if the home’s air conditioning system is still under warranty, as most HVAC manufacturers require regular maintenance as part of the warranty terms; lack of maintenance can result in voided warranty coverage.

You also have to consider that a homeowner who keeps up with ductwork inspections is more likely to do the same when it comes to the other parts of their HVAC system. This means the HVAC system that comes with the house will be less likely to break down unexpectedly, and it may be many years before you’d ever need to buy a replacement system. Moreover, a clean HVAC system can help you save on utility costs for several years down the line.
