When Should You Replace Your Water Heater?

Unless you’re okay with taking cold showers, it’s never a good idea to wait until your water heater no longer works efficiently before looking int getting a replacement. Here Mechanical Technologies discusses how you can tell if your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan.

The Average Lifespan of a Water Heater

Modern water heaters can last a long time with proper maintenance and inspections. A gas water heater is expected to last eight to 12 years, while an electric heater typically lasts from 10 to 15 years. However, there are some water heaters that can operate for even longer with regular maintenance. Once it has surpassed the average lifespan, you should have your water heater checked for leaks. If your technician finds any, this is the best time to replace your water heater.

When to Replace Your Water Heater

Although the average lifespan of a water heater is around a decade, certain things can shorten it. Here are four signs that indicate it’s time for a water heater replacement.

  • Inconsistent temperatures – If the water from the heater isn’t as hot as it used to be, or if the unit is taking longer to heat up the water, it’s time to have it inspected and potentially replaced.
  • Rusty water – If the water coming from your water heater is tinged brown, either your water heater or your home’s piping is rusty. It may not be easy to determine which of the two is the culprit, so calling your local water heater technician is your best option.
  • Strange noises – Your water heater may make strange noises as it’s heating your water. If there’s a hissing or sizzling noise, there may be sediment buildup within your unit.
  • Leaks – The presence of water or moisture around your hot water heater may be a sign of a leak. Calling in technicians so they can find and address the problem is the best option.
