How Residential and Commercial AC Systems Operate

The heating and cooling needs of a typical household are simply different compared to a commercial or industrial property. While both residential and commercial air conditioning systems function to keep indoor environments comfortable, a variety of factors aside from model and design are what make them different. Our air conditioner service experts at Mechanical Technologies share more insight.

Placement

Residential AC units are typically placed outside the house and on the ground. They can also be mounted on the outer walls depending on the homeowner’s preference. But as for commercial and industrial units, ground placement won’t always be ideal. Since they’re bigger, they’re much louder when they operate and can disrupt the employees and customers. They may also take up space around the property, which is why they’re installed on rooftops. This solves the noise problem while also saving on space. Commercial AC placement even provides easier expansion when needed. More importantly, repair technicians handle maintenance checks without anyone interfering within the facility.

Maintenance Requirements

The overall maintenance requirements of a residential and commercial AC unit are different for several reasons. Commercial systems also cost more in AC repair and maintenance compared to residential units, as they’re bigger and have more mechanical components running simultaneously. Of course, both require maintenance from trained and experienced technicians to ensure they function correctly.

Size

Both systems will have the same essential components like thermostats, evaporators, blower fans, and compressors. However, residential units are much smaller compared to their commercial counterparts, only delivering around five to eight tons of heating and cooling in an average-sized home. In comparison, commercial AC units deliver around 50 tons to enclosed spaces of a commercial property or facility.
