It’s Time to Break These 4 Bad HVAC Habits

Your HVAC is a large investment that should be properly taken care of. In order to take full advantage of its benefits — such as increased comfort and energy savings — you need to avoid doing these four things to your HVAC system.

  1. Planting too close to the equipment. When it comes to heating and air conditioning systems, the last thing you want is to block the airflow. If there are shrubs or weeds growing near your outdoor unit — which is called the condenser — make sure you prune them back regularly. Plants too near your outdoor unit can result in higher repair costs and reduced AC life.
  1. Closing the registers and vents. When you close registers or vents in unused rooms, condensation may occur due to lower surface temperatures. This encourages the growth of mold and mildew and makes the rooms feel warm and stuffy. The same principle applies to your furniture. There should be no rugs, carpets, drapes, wall art or couches blocking your registers and vents.
  1. Not regularly changing the air filters. Air filters trap airborne particles so that they do not circulate inside the system and get redistributed to living areas. When you fail to replace your filters as recommended, dirt, dust and other debris will build up in them, significantly reducing the quality of your indoor air. As a general rule, air filter replacement should be done every one to three months.
  1. Constantly adjusting the thermostat. Constantly adjusting the setting on your thermostat only leads to frequent on and off cycles. Just because your home is set to a cooler temperature in the summer does not mean your AC is going to cool your home more quickly. Instead, it will just run longer, which produces unnecessary strain on your system.
