Registers, grilles, and diffusers are important components of your home’s HVAC system and are often interchangeable. They serve the same purpose: to cover the openings of air ducts on the walls, ceilings, and floors. However, they are different in many ways, especially in their functionality. Trusted HVAC contractor Mechanical Technologies explains the difference between each important ventilation component in your home.
Registers cover your home’s supply vents, which are the openings in your home where heated or cooled air coming from the HVAC system is blown out via the air ducts. What sets it apart from the other ventilation components around your home is that they come with dampers. These are lever mechanisms that allow you to control the direction and the amount of airflow you want for the room.
Grilles are covers for your home’s return air vents, which are the openings that draw indoor air into the HVAC system to be conditioned. They look like registers, but the difference is that they are fixed covers. Since air moves toward the vents and into the HVAC system, a damper isn’t necessary.
Diffusers are quite similar to registers. These are also vent covers with dampers. The main difference is that diffusers have variability in the direction of airflow – a feature registers don’t have. Usually, diffusers have all-around designs compared to registers with a single-air direction. Most of the time, diffusers are found on your ceiling covering an air release outlet.
